What is it? At its most basic level, SEO is nothing more than having the words you want to be found for be found on your website. It ensures Google, Yahoo and Bing can find you. Search engines need you more than you need them. Your business IS their inventory. These search engines exist for one sole purpose – helping people solve problems. That might be having a problem remembering your phone number, or having a particular problem with their plumbing. In order for Google to find you, you have to have the problem and solution words on your site. Google can’t find what’s not there.
The more competitive your industry is on the Internet and in your neck of the woods, the more strategic you have to be. But, for the vast majority of small businesses, you just need to display a well-targeted keyword message, consistently throughout your site. Example, “business networking groups near Des Moines Iowa” vs. “business luncheons” which is a much broader category and geography. This is what makes the difference between being found for ‘what you do’ or ‘what you are’, vs. ‘who you are’. If someone already knows ‘who you are’, that’s a lot fewer people compared to the number of people searching for what you can do for them.
Then, place these keywords as many places around your site as is feasible. Here’s the thing, Google has spent millions of dollars to make their search engine ‘think’ like you do when you’re trying to decide how ‘relevant’ one search result is from another. When you search, what are the criteria you use to click on one link vs. another? Is it the specificity of what you’re looking for and how the result matches what you’re looking for? Popularity/placement? (Think page 1 vs. page 5) Not having to dig too deep to determine relevance (think keyword in the page title; description; business name e.g. Des Moines Business Group; see it in the URL listed for the result, etc.)? Videos and pictures? What is it when you get to the web page that makes you stay longer than others (think titles, highlighted words and other details that confirm you’re at the right place)?
